Power and Energy

We provide specialist technical expertise and engineering advisory services to the power and energy industry on a wide range of losses including those related to gas and steam turbines, boilers, heat recovery steam generators, cooling water systems, transformers, power distribution (low, medium and high voltage) and steam distribution (process and heating).

Our specialists are experienced in a wide range of power generation facilities including fossil fuelled plants, Combined Heat and Power (CHP) facilities, combined cycle plants, waste to energy plants as well as other renewable energy facilities. We carry out causation investigations not only to mitigate the actual loss, but also to assist in identifying measures that may be used to mitigate against similar future incidents and where required, to support potential subrogation actions.

Our investigations can be supported by destructive and non-destructive testing of mechanical parts, material properties analysis, chemical analysis (for example of feedwater and lubricating oils) and in the case of renewable energy, can be supported by both chemical and biological process analysis.

McLellan specialists can mobilise quickly to undertake site inspections in order to assess and scope the damage to the plant, equipment, machinery and distribution networks. Based on our knowledge and extensive experience, we advise our clients in an expeditious manner when evaluating reinstatement proposals to ensure that critical items of plant return to operation as quickly and as safely as possible.

We can also provide initial reserve calculations and develop quantum and cost assessments of the permanent and temporary reinstatement works in order to determine the reasonableness of a property damage claim.

With our knowledge gained from working on losses around the world, we are also able to consider and advise on local issues that can affect property damage claims such as relevant legislation, applicable codes and standards as well as the productivity, methodologies and available resources for the reinstatement works.

McLellan also provides assistance with the assessment of business interruption/operational time (production) losses by compiling before, during and after loss scenarios following our review of technical specifications, data logs, maintenance and operational records as well as production data. We also develop loss event timelines and critical path programmes for reinstatement works and then, where required, utilise these to monitor and track progress on site of the reinstatement works. Our specialists work closely with the insured by providing detailed advice on potential improvements to reinstatement timescales, including the proposed logic and sequencing for completion of the repairs and reinstatement of operations and production.
