Process Control and Automation

Process control and automation (PC&A) systems must provide safe and effective control and monitoring of plant. The targets are to improve productivity and quality. McLellan has extensive knowledge of automation systems in a range of sectors including power generation, transmission and distribution, metals, pharmaceuticals, transportation and building services.

The primary concern of an automation system is that the requirements and suitability of programmable logic controller (PLC) and distributed control systems (DCS) for basic automation suit the manufacturing process. The basic automation system should also be suitably integrated with the supervisory control of production (Level 2) and manufacturing execution systems (Level 3). McLellan, through many years of experience, understands the various types of processes, whether discrete, batch or continuous and the dynamic variables associated with them. Requirements for proper specification, operating and maintenance (O&M) documentation and quality assurance are of particular importance; these are essential to ensure a satisfactory solution in the long term.

McLellan services include:

  • Feasibility studies
  • Scheme designs
  • Preparation of technical specifications and cost estimates Compilation of tender enquiry documents, tender reviews and assessments
  • Supervision of installation and commissioning
  • Optimisation of new or existing systems
  • Reliability/availability analysis
  • On-site services including Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) as well as support during the commissioning phases
  • Engineering advisory services to the insurance industry

McLellan has delivered projects for power stations, integrated steelworks, combined heat and power plants, chemical and pharmaceutical plants as well as coal handling and other bulk material handling facilities. In addition to having a thorough understanding of the process requirements, McLellan specialists can also advise on all aspects of automation systems – which may include intelligent instrumentation, Distributed Control Systems (DCSs), Programmable Logic Controls (PLCs), Building Management Systems (BMSs), plant communications, field bus networks and Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs).
